Kinja'd!!!

Looks like I can't get a chance to demo ride a Yamaha VMAX and an FJR. Fuck you, weather.

Dealership mass-emailed people saying that after friday, the weekend may be looking a bit wet, and to add more irritation, Yamaha specifically stated "no test rides can be done on wet roads."

Ugh.

No mass demo rides for me. OTL

While on the subject of yamaha bikes, question - Which would you recommend for a starter bike for a taller, long legged guy between a yamaha virago and a suzuki intruder. Have you ridden either of them?

I haven't ridden cruiser style bikes with the exception of the Harley VRSC but I'd probably say that you may have to pick something a bit more upright. I'd say the FZ6 or even Honda's offerings could be a good start, but as long as you know how to utilize a manual transmission (1 down, x up) on a bike (it works similar to a car's but you are going to have to learn a bit more) and you're down pat with how a bike handles, I'd say you've got your work cut out quite easily.

I will say that it's not a good idea to start above 800cc or higher (literbike). Then again, the first manual bike I rode was a Yamaha FZ1 with little to no knowledge with how a bike tranmission worked - and that worked out alright. But that's me.

I am 6'2" and weigh 230 lbs with stupidly long legs. Anything that has me leaning forward will wreck my spine. I tried riding my friend's ninja 250 beater bike. I would rather hang myself than ride that thing again. I also looked ridiculous. I rode my dad's honda 750K and liked that a lot better. The virago and intruder are both available as 750s pretty easily and cheaply so they have more than enough oomph to move but aren't going to light up the rears every time I look at the throttle since their frames are decently heavy for a bike. Plus they're "cruisers" sure but not so big and heavy as to be unwieldy. The heavy fairings on my dad's honda did get old in city traffic as a newbie. And all I was doing was riding around the subdivision to see how I would handle the slow speeds of downtown GR. I prefer those sitting positions for riding around and whatnot so I guess I'll try asking others who have more experience on them to see which ones are better to own. I know very little about bikes other than I don't like sport bikes and bikes over 1000cc will bite you in the ass when you're not being careful. Even the fat harley hogs.

Like I said, it's personal preference, though if it helps, I'm 6'2" / 250 lbs and have been riding my Honda 919 for weeks without complaint, apart from the stock seat being less than comfortable.

I would recommend on sport tourers such as the Honda ST1100.

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.........yeah that's probably the bike for me. Either that or the uber sexy BMW sport tourers (drooooooooool). But that's all if I get serious about riding. And if I win the lottery for the BMW bikes.

In my area there's a bunch of viragos, intruders, and a couple of other cruisers and larger engined (>400cc) standard bikes available for 1500$ in very rideable condition.

Make sure it's a bike that you're comfortable with. There aren't new affordable upright standards or cruisers (unless you enjoy lack of power but hey) compared to the 90s, but eh.

Yeah that's why I'm looking in my area instead of ebay. I know I'll need to ride them and see how they are on west michigan hills and roads. Plus, again, no shortage of bikes for between 1000 and 2000 means I can take my time and find a good starter bike. But UUUUUNNNNGGGGHHHHHDAT INLINE 6 BMW BIKE! Seriously, way sexier to me than any sport bike. However, it costs as much as a fiesta ST......and I actually bought a fiesta ST instead because it's kinda the better all year choice. But still, I can dream......
